The SMU Mustangs are enhancing their wide receiver corps with the addition of transfers Jalen Hale from Alabama and Yannick Smith from East Carolina. This change comes after the team graduated its top two receivers, Jordan Hudson and Romello Brinson, who collectively recorded over 1,400 receiving yards and nine touchdowns last season.
Quarterback Kevin Jennings is currently sidelined due to a hand injury, limiting his ability to work with key offensive players. In his absence, redshirt freshman quarterback Ty Hawkins has highlighted Smith's size and contested catch ability, while also praising Hale's speed and agility.
Hale, a former five-star recruit, is recovering from a knee injury that kept him out for the entire 2024 season but is showing promise at SMU.
Wide receivers coach Rob Likens noted Hale's SEC experience and toughness, which are expected to aid the team's offensive strategy. Smith brings over 1,000 receiving yards and eight touchdowns from East Carolina, recognized for his aggressive play style that fits well with the Mustangs' passing approach.
With two weeks left in fall camp before facing Florida State on September 7, the team is focused on developing chemistry and finalizing their depth chart, while cornerbacks coach Kyle Ward remarked on the competitive edge brought by the new transfers.
