Sandell decides it
Tate Sandell’s 47-yard field goal provided the final points Saturday as the Oklahoma Sooners defeated the Texas Longhorns 27-24 at the Cotton Bowl. The kick completed a 17-point fourth quarter for Oklahoma, which rallied from a 17-10 deficit after three periods. Attendance was 92,100.
Texas controls the first half
Texas opened the scoring in the first period when Arch Manning connected with Cam Coleman on a 41-yard touchdown pass, followed by Gianni Spetic’s kick. Oklahoma answered in the second period after Dakoda Fields returned a blocked punt 0 yards for a touchdown, with Sandell’s kick tying the game at 7-7.
The Longhorns moved back in front on Manning’s 34-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Wingo. Spetic then added a 23-yard field goal, giving Texas a 17-7 lead at halftime. The quarter scores were Texas 7, 10, 0 and 7, and Oklahoma 0, 7, 3 and 17.
Oklahoma rallies in the fourth
Sandell’s 53-yard field goal was the only score of the third period, cutting Texas’ lead to 17-10. Oklahoma tied the game in the fourth when Lloyd Avant scored on a 2-yard run and Sandell added the kick.
