The Dallas Cowboys added running back Israel Abanikanda from their practice squad after Malik Davis suffered a hip injury requiring surgery. Abanikanda is expected to be Dallas’ third running back. Davis had been behind Javonte Williams during training camp while competing with Jaydon Blue, who was waived at the end of the preseason.

The Cowboys then claimed Emari Demercado from Kansas City, and he is set to back up Williams in the season opener at the New York Giants. Fullback Hunter Luepke also remains on the roster.

The Dallas-New York game has a projected total of 48.5 points. Nick Harris selected Dallas to win and forecast a lower-scoring result, pointing to the Cowboys’ experience, the opening week and possible weather. Coach Brian Schottenheimer said linebacker DeMarvion Overshown will take on much of the job of communicating defensive calls through the helmet, though other players are ready if defensive packages require a change.

Dallas is evaluating offensive-line options, including veteran tackle D.J. Humphries, who was released by Washington. Arizona selected him 24th overall in 2015, and he became a full-time starter in 2016 before injuries affected his time with the Cardinals through 2023.

Receiver Ryan Flournoy’s contract has a $1.5 million base salary, a $500,000 roster bonus and $1.25 million in remaining signing-bonus proration. A report said a trade before the bonus is paid could save about $2 million against the cap, while a strong 2026 season could raise his trade value. George Pickens is playing under the franchise tag.
