The Dallas Cowboys are assessing their quarterback lineup as the NFL roster cut deadline on August 30 approaches. The competition for the backup position behind Dak Prescott has intensified, with Sam Howell and Joe Milton both vying for the role during the preseason.
Howell, who has started 18 of his 20 NFL games, may face release as Milton has reportedly shown strong performance in recent games. Ben Grimaldi from USA Today notes that while Howell had an early advantage, Milton's recent outings have changed the competition's dynamics.
Head coach Brian Schottenheimer indicated that Howell was slightly ahead but acknowledged Milton's significant improvements. "If you would just take the training camp competition, it's probably neck and neck, and Sam maybe a little bit ahead," Schottenheimer stated, while also recognizing Milton's impressive performances.
The decision on whether to keep two or three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster complicates matters, as retaining three could require cuts at other positions. Howell's contract, fully guaranteed at $2.5 million for the year, would still incur costs if he is released. As training camp concludes, the Cowboys will finalize their decision, potentially influenced by their preseason finale against the New Orleans Saints.
