Turning Point in the Eighth
The game remained tied at 1-1 until the bottom of the eighth inning, when Houston’s offense erupted to take control. Raynel Delgado singled to center field, driving in two runs to put the Astros ahead 3-2. The momentum shifted again moments later when Delgado reached base again, and after a fielder’s choice play that initially appeared to end the threat, the Astros added an insurance run. A challenge by Houston regarding the call at second base was overturned, allowing Delgado to score and extend the lead to 4-2.
Early Scoring and Pitching Duels
Detroit had taken an early 1-0 lead in the second inning when Lee singled to left field, allowing Torkelson to score. The Tigers tied the game in the fifth inning, but the scoring was unusual. Delgado scored on a passed ball by catcher Dingler, with Walker advancing to second on the same error. The sequence was repeated shortly after, with Delgado scoring again on another passed ball by Dingler, though the score remained 1-1 due to the timing and context of the plays. In the top of the eighth, Detroit’s Dingler hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Lee to make it 2-1.
Framber Valdez was a standout for the Tigers, pitching 6.0 innings and allowing only one earned run while striking out six batters. He was supported by Keider Montero, who pitched 1.1 innings and took the loss, and Will Vest, who recorded the save. On the mound for Houston, Hunter Brown pitched 5.2 innings, allowing one earned run and striking out seven. Bryan King earned the win with a perfect 1.0 inning, and Josh Hader closed out the game with his third save of the season.
