Scammers often take advantage of disasters by masquerading as charitable organizations or using names that closely mimic legitimate groups. To avoid falling victim to fraud, the office recommends several precautions. Donors should research unfamiliar charities using resources like CharityWatch and GuideStar. It's important to ensure that any organization is properly registered and to be wary of names that are nearly identical to well-known charities.

Additionally, individuals should refrain from wiring money to unknown entities and avoid sharing sensitive information such as bank account details, credit card numbers, or Social Security numbers with unsolicited callers. Scammers can easily fake names and phone numbers to appear trustworthy.
