Nonprofit groups and local government agencies that work directly with veterans have until Dec. 2 to apply for a share of an estimated $31 million in state grants, Gov. Greg Abbott's office announced Monday.
The money comes from the Fund for Veterans' Assistance, which the Texas Veterans Commission administers. The application portal opened at 5 p.m. Central time Oct. 2 and closes at 5 p.m. Central time Dec. 2.
Rules for this round
The grants are for the commission's 2028 funding period, and several terms are new, according to the announcement:
- Each grant runs 24 months.
- Awards range from $50,000 to $600,000.
- An organization may apply for and receive up to three grants.
- A county government may receive up to four, including a grant for a veterans treatment court.
The commission awards money in five categories: general assistance, Housing for Texas Heroes, veterans mental health, veterans treatment courts and veteran county service offices. Past grants have paid for home modifications, rental help and homelessness prevention, mental health care and service dogs, legal aid and transportation, food and financial assistance, and job and trade-skills training.
Since 2009 the commission has awarded more than $400 million through more than 1,790 grants, the governor's office said. This year's announcement followed the commission's Grants Across Texas tour, during which it presented more than $40 million to 160 organizations.
