Celina residents who could use a hand with outdoor chores or minor fixes around the house can apply for help from a volunteer crew this fall.

The city is organizing its Life Connected. Service Day for Saturday, Nov. 14, according to the event page on the city website. Volunteers will meet on Celina's downtown square at 8 a.m. for a breakfast kickoff and remarks from the mayor, collect T-shirts, supplies and assignments at 8:30, and head out to job sites by 9.

The city lists the event as running from 8 to 11 a.m.

Getting help

Crews will work on jobs such as yard work, exterior upkeep and small repairs for residents who need extra support keeping up their homes, the page says. Two conditions apply:

  • each project has to be one that can reasonably be finished in four hours or less;
  • the homeowner must be home on the workday to guide the volunteers.

Residents apply through an assistance request form on the city site. Before the event, the city's volunteer and community engagement coordinator will schedule a visit to look over each request.

Signing up to work

Individuals, families and groups can volunteer through the city's volunteer portal, linked from the event page. Volunteers can leave once their assigned project is done. The city is also seeking sponsors; inquiries go to the email address listed on the event page.

Board review Tuesday

The Keep Celina Beautiful board, which helps run the effort, gathers Tuesday evening, Oct. 20, at 6 o'clock in the conference room at City Hall, 142 N. Ohio St. Its agenda includes a discussion of the service day and an update on a volunteer fair, along with training for board members, an introduction of new members and the selection of a chair and vice chair.

Members of the public can speak during open forum.

At its August meeting, the board discussed the date, time and logistics for the fall service day and talked about bringing back the city's Yard of the Month program, according to minutes in the packet for Tuesday's meeting. The city's Yard of the Month page says the program recognizes a well-kept residential yard each month, judged on appearance, creativity, originality and landscape maintenance.
