Texas Christian University (TCU) has restored media credentials for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, ending a dispute that followed the newspaper's reporting on a locker room incident involving former TCU safety Jacob Fields and wide receiver Dozie Ezukanma. This incident, which occurred on August 13, resulted in Fields' dismissal from the team and his arrest for aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury.
Ezukanma reportedly sustained serious injuries, including a brain bleed and concussion, requiring a three-day hospitalization. TCU indicated that both parties engaged in productive discussions, leading to the decision to move forward. The initial revocation of the Star-Telegram's credentials drew significant attention as more details about the altercation emerged, with the newspaper initially citing an unnamed source about potential bullying, a claim later retracted.
Concerns were raised by TCU's athletic director Mike Buddie regarding the narrative created by the reporting, which led to threats against Fields and his family. Following the credential revocation, the Star-Telegram was prohibited from covering TCU athletic events, including a season opener against North Carolina in Dublin, although their reporter managed to attend the game without official credentials.
With the reinstatement, TCU aims to shift the focus back to the football season, though the legal matters surrounding Fields and Ezukanma remain unresolved.
