Southern Methodist University (SMU) has named Derek Gossler as its new Senior Associate Athletic Director for Revenue Generation. This appointment is part of the university's strategy to enhance its competitive standing in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) by prioritizing revenue generation, a crucial aspect of contemporary college athletics.
Gossler arrives with more than 15 years of expertise in fundraising, ticketing, and commercial strategy. He previously held the position of Senior Associate Athletic Director for Development and Chief Revenue Officer at the University of Wyoming, where he successfully boosted cash and pledges through the Cowboy Joe Club and set new records in ticket revenue and premium seating.
Before his tenure at Wyoming, Gossler played a key role at the U.S. Air Force Academy, where he contributed to five consecutive years of record fundraising. His background also includes significant achievements at Arizona State University, where he was involved in raising $86 million during a major fundraising campaign and helped establish the men's hockey program through substantial donor support.
Gossler's diverse experience across various athletic departments equips him to meet SMU's needs in one of the largest and wealthiest markets in the country. He plans to enhance revenue through innovative strategies and strengthen ties with fans, supporters, and corporate partners.
As SMU continues to advance its athletic programs nationally, Gossler's hiring underscores a commitment to sustaining revenue growth during the Mustangs' transition into the ACC. Specific plans and initiatives from Gossler regarding SMU's revenue generation have yet to be revealed.
