SMU senior Enzo Panozzo has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference’s co-defensive player of the week after the Mustangs defeated NC State 1-0. The conference announced the honor Tuesday, with Panozzo sharing it with Notre Dame’s Blake Kelly.
Panozzo, a Sarasota, Florida, native, captained SMU’s defense in its ACC home opener and produced the only score of the match. NC State managed eight shots, with two on target, as SMU posted its fifth shutout this season. The recognition is the first ACC weekly award of Panozzo’s career and the second conference weekly honor for SMU this season.
SMU moved to No. 3 in the United Soccer Coaches poll following the victory. The Mustangs have a 7-0-1 record overall and are 2-0-0 in conference play. Their next ACC match is scheduled for Sunday at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia.
