BJ Edwards, previously a guard with the SMU Mustangs, is set to join the Oklahoma Sooners. This decision follows his eligibility for an extra season of college basketball, granted by a five-for-five temporary injunction for the 2022 recruiting class.
Edwards played three seasons at SMU in Dallas after transferring from the University of Tennessee, where he had limited playing time. During his tenure with the Mustangs, he played under two different head coaches and became a key player despite facing injuries. Last season was his best, as he participated in 28 games, averaging 12.7 points per game with a shooting percentage of 47.4.
He also contributed 5.9 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game, and his defensive skills earned him All-Conference defensive team recognition in the ACC, with averages of 2.4 and 2.3 steals per game in his last two seasons.
Although SMU showed interest in keeping him, Edwards opted to play for head coach Porter Moser in Norman. The Sooners are aiming to strengthen their roster after a 21-16 overall record last season, which included a 7-11 performance in SEC play, and they missed the NCAA Tournament. Edwards' addition is anticipated to enhance the team's competitiveness for the upcoming winter season.
