Dozie Ezukanma, a TCU wide receiver, was hospitalized for three days due to a brain bleed, concussion, and other injuries after an alleged assault by teammate Jacob Fields. The incident took place on August 13 at the Walsh Athletic Complex, as detailed in an arrest warrant affidavit obtained by the Fort Worth Star Telegram.
Reportedly dissatisfied with Ezukanma's practice performance, Fields allegedly punched him in the head while Ezukanma was seated and using his phone. Witnesses indicated that Fields subsequently kicked Ezukanma in the back of the head, which caused him to lose consciousness. Ezukanma later recounted to police that he could only remember being in the training room and inquiring about the events that transpired.
Following the assault, Ezukanma experienced severe headaches and ringing in his ears, prompting his hospitalization. Initial scans revealed a brain bleed, resulting in his transfer to the ICU. He underwent several CT scans during his stay, with one indicating that the hematoma had increased in size. He was discharged on August 16, having also sustained a strained AC joint in his shoulder.
Jacob Fields was dismissed from the team on August 18, subsequently turning himself in to law enforcement and facing charges for aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. He was released from Tarrant County Jail after posting a $50,000 bond. Fields later expressed remorse in a text message to TCU police, stating that he acted emotionally and offered to pay for Ezukanma's hospital expenses.
TCU head coach Sonny Dykes remarked on the incident, emphasizing it was uncharacteristic for both the team and Fields. Ezukanma, a graduate of Keller Timber Creek High School in Fort Worth, was anticipated to be a starting wide receiver this season. TCU's next game is against Grambling on September 12.
