The Dallas Cowboys have released quarterback Joe Milton as of Monday. Milton joined the Cowboys in April 2025 after a trade with the New England Patriots, which involved a fifth-round draft pick. He had been vying for the backup quarterback role against Sam Howell throughout the offseason.

Earlier that same day, the Cowboys added running back Emari Demercado by claiming him off waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs, which led to Milton's release to make room for Demercado on the 53-man roster. During the 2026 preseason, Milton participated in three games, where he completed 29 of 43 passes for a total of 378 yards, achieving three touchdowns without any interceptions.

He also rushed 12 times for 14 yards and scored a rushing touchdown.

Head coach Brian Schottenheimer expressed trust in both Milton and Howell as backup candidates. He recalled a discussion with Milton that showcased his confidence in his skills, while also acknowledging the difficulties of mastering the team's intricate offensive system.

Milton remarked on his comfort with the Cowboys' offense, noting that a full season and a second training camp helped him feel more at ease with the playbook.

With Milton's exit, the Cowboys' quarterback roster now includes Dak Prescott and Sam Howell. Milton is subject to waivers, and if he goes unclaimed, he may have a chance to join the Cowboys' practice squad.
