The Dallas Cowboys have made notable changes to their roster, leading to the departure of cornerback Josh Butler after three seasons. Butler, who joined the Cowboys in 2023 following stints in two spring football leagues, expressed both disappointment and pride regarding his release.
In a social media update, Butler pointed out his achievements during his time with the team, claiming he never allowed a touchdown or a pass over 20 yards. He also shared his gratitude for the opportunity to return to football after a four-year break.
During the preseason, Butler demonstrated his defensive capabilities with six tackles across three games. In total, he played in six games over the last three seasons, accumulating 26 tackles, five pass deflections, and one sack. However, an ACL injury in 2024 sidelined him for the entire 2023 season, limiting his appearances in 2025.
Despite his solid track record, Butler faced intense competition at the cornerback position, which contributed to his release. The Cowboys have not dismissed the chance of bringing him back for their practice squad, as he has proven to be a dependable depth player when healthy.
As the Cowboys assess their roster, it remains unclear whether another NFL team will sign Butler or if he will rejoin the Cowboys in a different role. The organization is actively exploring options to strengthen their lineup as they pursue a Super Bowl title in 2026.
