The 2026 college football season will begin with a game between the TCU Horned Frogs and the North Carolina Tar Heels in Dublin, Ireland. Scheduled for Saturday at noon EDT, the matchup will take place at Aviva Stadium and will be broadcast on ESPN.

TCU enters the game as a 9.5-point favorite, having recorded a 9-4 record in the last two seasons, both of which ended with bowl victories. Under the leadership of head coach Sonny Dykes, the Horned Frogs have achieved a 36-17 record over five seasons, including a trip to the national championship game during his first year.

In contrast, North Carolina, coached by Bill Belichick, aims to bounce back from a challenging 4-8 season in 2025-26. Belichick has acknowledged the difficulties of preparing for an opening game, highlighting the uncertainties both teams will face. He stated, "There are unknowns on our team, there are unknowns on our opponents," underscoring that the real challenge will be revealed when the game starts.

Alongside the TCU-North Carolina game, other notable matchups on Saturday include the No. 14 USC Trojans against the San Jose State Spartans and N.C. State facing Virginia, among others. Most FBS season openers will occur the following week, with numerous games scheduled from Thursday through September 7.
