University of Houston football player Carmello Brooks is facing two criminal cases, and his attorney said Brooks remains suspended from the team while they are pending. Brent Wasserstein also said he hopes Brooks will be allowed to attend classes.
The second case stems from an August dispute in northwest Harris County. Brooks is accused of breaking a door handle during a conflict involving a woman and her sister, resulting in a criminal mischief charge. Family members said Brooks, the two women and Nariah Harley grew up together in Killeen and went to the same high school.
Harley is from Killeen and attends Texas Southern University.
The other charge alleges an assault involving a pregnant person. Harley told the judge she wants that case, along with all charges, dismissed. She said an argument occurred inside Brooks’ apartment last week, and that Brooks asked her several times to go before carrying her out when she declined.
Harley said Brooks called police because she would not leave, and that officers misunderstood what happened. She identified Brooks as the father of her baby and said she does not consider herself a victim.
