Oakland Athletics prospect Ryan Lasko remains in stable condition after undergoing surgery to repair a fractured vertebra. The injury occurred during a Double-A baseball game in Frisco, Texas, after Lasko collided with teammate Devin Taylor while attempting to catch a fly ball. Both players dove for the ball, and Lasko was left motionless on the field before receiving medical attention.
Dr. Jonathan Poggi performed a spinal decompression and stabilization procedure at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano. The operation addressed a fracture in the C6–C7 vertebrae. Lasko, a 24-year-old outfielder for the Double-A Midland RockHounds, was selected by the Athletics in the second round of the 2023 amateur draft out of Rutgers University.
Athletics general manager David Forst issued a statement confirming the organization’s support for Lasko and his family. Forst noted he has been in contact with Lasko’s mother, Patti, to convey the team’s thoughts and prayers. He also thanked Midland athletic trainers Noah Huff and Audy Merrick, the Frisco RoughRiders, and local paramedics for their immediate response to the incident.
The team is monitoring Lasko’s progress closely. Forst stated that medical staff are directing all available resources toward the player’s recovery and expressed encouragement based on updates from Dr. Poggi. Player development director Ed Sprague is traveling to Frisco to oversee the situation, and counseling services will be made available to teammates affected by the event.
Lasko has played 13 games at Triple-A Las Vegas and participated in the Arizona Fall League, where he batted .357 with nine stolen bases in 21 games. During the current season with Midland, he has appeared in games with a .209 batting average, six home runs, 34 runs batted in, and a .635 on-base plus slugging percentage.
