Second-Half Surge Turns Tide
Conner Weigman orchestrated a decisive second-half comeback, accounting for three touchdowns to lead the Houston Cougars to a 27-17 victory over the visiting UCF Knights on Saturday. The win improves Houston’s record to 4-1, while UCF falls to 3-2.
The Cougars entered the final period trailing 10-0 after UCF capitalized on early offensive efficiency. However, Weigman’s dual-threat capability shifted the momentum entirely. He connected with Re’Shaun Sanford II and caught scoring runs of his own to erase the deficit.
Key Scoring Plays Define Contest
UCF opened the scoring in the first quarter when Keyone Jenkins found Josh Derry on a 13-yard pass, followed by a Will Stone extra point. Stone added a 30-yard field goal in the second quarter to extend the Knights’ lead to 10-0 at halftime.
Houston’s offense woke up in the third quarter. Jenkins rushed for one yard and converted the kick to make it 17-0 before Weigman ignited the Cougars’ comeback. Weigman ran for a 19-yard touchdown, then followed with a one-yard rushing score to cut the margin to 17-14.
The fourth quarter belonged to Houston. Weigman completed his trio of touchdowns with another one-yard rush, giving the Cougars their first lead at 21-17. Jonathan Dimas sealed the win with two field goals: a 40-yard kick to make it 24-17, and a 46-yarder in the final minutes to push the score to 27-17.
