Clement’s 10th-inning homer sends Blue Jays past Astros, 5-4

Clement breaks the tie

Ernie Clement changed a tied game in the 10th inning Wednesday, August 5, 2026, lifting a 391-foot homer to left with Urías scoring ahead of him as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Houston Astros 5-4 at Daikin Park.

Clement’s two-run shot gave Toronto a 5-3 lead after the Blue Jays had rallied from three runs down. Houston answered in the 10th when Alvarez singled to right to score Peña, but Alvarez was out stretching at second. The Astros challenged the play, and the call on the field was upheld.

Houston builds the early lead

Houston scored all of its early runs in the third inning. Altuve opened the scoring with a 401-foot homer to left for a 1-0 Astros lead. Walker followed later in the inning with a double to left that brought in Varsho, and Wade Jr. singled to center to score Walker, pushing Houston ahead 3-0.

Toronto’s comeback came in the sixth. Okamoto singled to center to score Straw, cutting the deficit to 3-1. Sánchez then tied it with a 398-foot homer to right, with Okamoto scoring on the play. The scoring plays included exactly three home runs: Altuve’s, Sánchez’s and Clement’s.

Pitching lines

Jameson Taillon allowed three earned runs on six hits and two walks in four innings for Toronto, striking out four. Spencer Miles worked two innings with two hits, no earned runs, no walks and two strikeouts. Mason Fluharty had one inning with no hits, no earned runs, no walks and two strikeouts.

Tyler Rogers gave Toronto one inning with one hit, no earned runs and no walks. Louis Varland earned the win, improving to 4-4, after one inning with no hits, no earned runs, no walks and one strikeout. Chase Lee recorded his first save after one inning with one hit, no earned runs and no walks.

For Houston, Hunter Brown allowed three earned runs on three hits and two walks in six innings while striking out eight. Steven Okert, Bryan Abreu and Josh Hader each worked one inning without allowing an earned run. Bennett Sousa took the loss, falling to 0-1, after allowing two hits and one earned run in one inning.

Records

Attendance was 27,751. Houston fell to 59-57, while Toronto improved to 54-61.
