A safety’s value is often easiest to notice when he is missing. Dallas may get Malik Hooker back Sunday against Houston, and that matters beyond the question of whether one more experienced defender can take the field.
Hooker was listed as a full participant Friday and received no game designation after limited work Wednesday and Thursday. He fractured his forearm in the Cowboys’ Week 1 game against the Giants and missed the past two contests.
The announcement does not guarantee a full workload or establish that the injury is fully behind him, but it removes one significant availability question before Dallas visits the Texans.
Hooker’s potential contribution becomes especially interesting beside the arrival of Joey Porter Jr. The former Pittsburgh cornerback arrived in Wednesday night’s trade and has no game designation himself. Dallas expects him to receive snaps, though the team has not disclosed how many or precisely where they will come.
Porter’s challenge is larger than learning a few names on a depth chart. Friday’s discussion from the Cowboys centered on his physical readiness and his ability to communicate. That is a sensible standard for a player entering a defense during the season, particularly one that has had to shuffle personnel.
A corner can have the athletic tools to survive an assignment and still create trouble if the coverage language is unclear before the snap.
Hooker cannot solve that by reputation. He can, conditionally, provide a veteran presence in the safety room while Porter absorbs Dallas’ terminology and checks. That is different from claiming the two will immediately operate as a seamless pair.
No public plan identifies their exact roles, and no Friday development proves that the secondary’s communication has been repaired. What changed is that Dallas has a more experienced option available while it evaluates a new one.
The need for that margin is plain in the injury list. DeMarvion Overshown is out for a third consecutive game with a hamstring injury, while Cobie Durant will miss another contest after also sitting out the loss to Baltimore. Rookie Jaishawn Barham has replaced Overshown at inside linebacker, with Dee Winters another option.
Those absences affect the defense’s overall structure, even if the immediate attention is directed toward the cornerback transaction.
Dallas is 1-2 after its 34-31 loss to Baltimore in Rio. The Cowboys therefore have little room for a secondary that spends Sunday sorting itself out, but urgency should not be confused with permission to overstate a Friday practice. Hooker’s return is a continuity benefit; Porter’s debut remains an experiment with a defined plan that has not been made public.
Houston complicates the timing. Nico Collins moved from limited work Wednesday and Thursday to full participation Friday and received no game designation. Will Anderson Jr. also practiced fully Thursday and Friday without a designation.
